10 Ways to Help Control Your Drinking on a Night Out

  • Know your body and your limits
Nothing is more important than knowing how your particular body reacts to alcohol. This can only come by experience. If you are not sure experiment at home with someone you trust. Learn how you feel and react to different drinks. Learn how many drinks is to much, to little and just right.
  • Eat
Food is important. Especially food that is high in protein. Eating will help slow the absorption of alcohol into your blood. Even if it's not much try and eat dinner and possibly a snack during the night.
  • Take sips
Not only will the drink last longer but you will likely be able to enjoy it more. Gulping or chugging your drink will only cause you to feel the need to get another and before you know it you wont even remember how many you've had.
  • Don't try and "keep up" with your friends
Peer pressure can get even the strongest person into trouble. Don't let the fact that someone is out pacing you with their number of drinks encourage you to go beyond your limits.
  • Drink a glass of water or non-alcoholic beverage several times throughout the night
This will space out your drinks and replenish the water your body needs. You will also feel ten times better the next day.
  • Do Something
If you try and do something active you will better understand what effect the alcohol you drank is having. Additionally, if there is something else to occupy your attention a person will tend to drink less.
  • Do not try strange drinks or shots you have not tried previously
Some drinks disguise the taste of alcohol effectively so that you don't know how much you've actually had.
  • Do not mix different types of alcohol in the same night
Everyone reacts to different types of alcohol in different ways. When you mix different types of alcohol you cannot predict how your body will react.
  • Be careful about drinking while on medication
Medication can increase the effects the alcohol has on your body. Make sure you consult your physician or the instructions of your medication before drink while on medication.
  • Stop drinking at least an hour before you leave
By stopping at least an hour before you will be able to judge what effect the alcohol has had on you that evening. You will also be better able to judge the safest and best way to get home.
