Potential Effects of a DWI Conviction

Drivers all across the nation are feeling the hefty burden of DWI and DUI fines. As a bare minimum, many tickets can lead to fines of more than $5,000, not including attorney and insurance fees. Jail time is another factor to consider. Following a second arrest and conviction, offenders are eligible to receive a jail sentence of between 3-30 day days.

Aside from the financial and legal impacts of acquiring a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) conviction, many students are learning that receiving a DWI while in college will inhibit their future careers. Many employers will not hire an individual if he or she has a drunk driving conviction on their driving record.

Although some companies only look back three to ten years on a person's record, many are beginning to look at the entire record, regardless of when the offense occurred. This frequently hurts people who had a little too much fun while in college.

As students apply and interview for internships, part-time positions, or full-time positions at a company, many are unaware of how far back and how detailed a background check can go. Do not let ignorance of background checks and their pervasiveness stunt a career.

New and potential employees are not the only ones who are at risk of DWI convictions. Employers may suspend or even terminate an existing employee who receives a DWI conviction. Governmental employees are at the highest risk as any government agency screens job applicants at a higher level and have more access to records.
