Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is a society that meets anonymously to help recovering and recovered alcoholics. They strive to help their members stay sober and to help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. The group suggests that alcoholics follow the program and abstain from consuming alcohol or even being near it while attempting to recover from alcoholism. Once a person has recovered, that person is expected to share his or her experience, strength, and hope with other members in an effort to help others solve the common problem.

Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, was the first program developed for alcoholics to utilize twelve steps. Since it was created, the concept has been recreated for other individuals with substance abuse, such as the foundation for Narcotics Anonymous.

In addition to programs for alcoholics, Al-Anon and Alateen are programs designed to help the friends and family of an alcoholic through the difficult time. It has been shown that those closest to a recovering alcoholic are important for the support that person in his or her recovery process. This support structure needs support as well to avoid becoming negative or discouraging over time.

AA is not for every alcoholic out there. It does have a very high attrition rate and some people do relapse. While this is true, there is also a lot of evidence supporting AA as an effective treatment of alcoholism.
