DWI Off Road

Driving while intoxicated can apply to any vehicle. While many people immediately think of driving a car or truck under the influence of alcohol, a DWI can be given for operating any motor vehicle. In some jurisdictions, DWIs can even be given for riding a horse or bicycle while intoxicated.

For the most part, DWIs are given for the operation of motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. These motor vehicles can include:

  • Cars
  • Trucks
  • Motorcycles
  • ATVs
  • Boats
  • Jet skis

The reasoning behind giving DWIs for motor vehicles that run off road is similar to that behind normal DWIs. If a person operates a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, his or her judgment and reaction time are seriously diminished. For this reason, it becomes very easy for accidents to occur.

DWIs are more prominent on the road because of the situation that causes the drunk driving. Most people who drive drunk do so coming home from a bar or a party. They are driving as a means of transportation while drunk. Most off road vehicles are used as a form of recreation. For this reason, it is less likely that a person is operating the vehicle while intoxicated. It does, however, happen.
