Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

While a DWI charge can have serious repercussions, there is no consequence of consuming alcohol that is as serious as alcohol poisoning. Because of the severity of this consequence, it is important that individuals know what to look for and know what steps to take if it is believed that an individual is suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Alcohol poisoning is the result of consuming too much alcohol in a short period of time. Depending on a person’s body, it may not take as much as one would think for a person to show signs of alcohol poisoning.

Because alcohol is a depressant, it slows down the body’s functions. With just a few drinks, a person may become less aware of his or her surroundings. With more drinks, including alcohol poisoning, alcohol will depress the nerves that control a variety of involuntary actions like breathing, the heartbeat, and the gag reflex.

With enough alcohol, these functions will stop completely. Even if a person stops drinking, the heart will keep beating and the alcohol that is already in the stomach will continue to enter the bloodstream and circulate. Some common signs of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Mental confusion, stupor, coma
  • Unresponsive to pinching of the skin
  • Seizures
  • Breathing at a very slow rate (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • Irregular breathing
  • Hypothermia (a very low body temperature), bluish or pale skin

If a person has alcohol poisoning, it is imperative that he or she be given medical attention immediately. Unlike a hangover or ordinary level of drunkenness, drinking black coffee, a cold shower, and sleep will not reverse alcohol poisoning.

While waiting for medical help to arrive, it is important not to leave the victim. Do not let the victim lie on his or her back or stomach. It is all too easy to choke on vomit or inhale it and choke in these positions. The side is the safest position for any person believed to be suffering from alcohol poisoning.
