Strict Penalties for DWI

There is a lot of controversy surrounding DWI. While there are no advocates for abolishing the repercussions of DWI, there are advocates on the other end of the spectrum. There are a lot of people, including some Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who are trying to increase penalties and decrease the legal limit on BAC.

On the very end of the spectrum, there are neo prohibitionists. These people would like to completely do away with alcohol. Some of them have proposed that the death penalty be administered to any drunk driver who causes someone ‘s death. This is an extremely harsh punishment. While it is a very serious crime, the proposed punishment does not at all fit the crime.

The original prohibitionists were also advocates for strong penalties for drinking. Many of these proposed penalties were just as absurd as the death penalty, if not more so. However, the neo prohibitionists are not the only ones who would like stricter enforcement.

Some members of MADD are trying to reduce the legal limit from 0.08 to 0.05 BAC. In addition to this, they are asking for harsher punishments as well. While they may not be advocating the death penalty, they are asking for higher fines and longer jail sentences.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who believe that education will work better than punishment to decrease drunk driving. These are the people who put together educational tools and programs for the community.
